The results are in… there are significant improvements when using oval compared to round chainrings.

The study was led by the University of Primorska, Slovenia found that significant gains can be found when using oval chainrings versus round.

  • Up to 9% increase of force
  • Up to 7% less oxygen consumption
  • Up to 15% less ventilation (breathing)
  • Up to 10% heart rate decrease

In short, it means that riders will consume less energy at the same power output using Oval chainrings. So, they can ride for longer and/or faster. The data also shows that the higher a rider climbs the more effort they need to put in, therefore it's important to maximise efficiency and effectiveness, and both can be improved both by using oval chainrings.
