Extra UK ABUS Factory Visit and Distribution

Extra is proud to announce its exclusive UK distribution deal with Abus starting immediately. Abus will be overseen by UK brand manager, John Harris and Head of Brands, Mark Greshon.

The Extra UK team visited the factory last month to learn more about the extensive history and heritage of the brand. Interestingly, the factory German-based factories, which still produce the majority of the Abus security range, are split over 3 locations.

The first factory we visited, built in 1957 and located in Rehe, showcased some of the high-tech research and development facilities that works alongside high-precision manufacturing operations. Roger Seal, the UK’s Sales and Marketing manager at Abus, showed the Extra UK team around the facilities explaining the history of the location and the showcased some of the fascinating in-house toolmaking facilities, constantly and meticulously maintaining the equipment needed to produce the highest quality locks on the market.

The next day, the Extra team were treated to a visit to the main Abus headquarters based outside Dortmund. This expansive facility not only encompasses a vast factory and distribution space, but also hosts the Abus museum. This journey through time showcases the story of the brand from its humble beginnings in the local lock-making industry, through to its current, market-leading position as the world’s premier mobile-security and lock manufacturer.

The innovative security centre serves as a beacon of the Abus brand, where visitors can see the full range of products from Abus first hand and particularly allowed the team at Extra to fully experience the quality and workmanship that goes into every product.

Lastly, the Abus testing facilities demonstrated the rigorous testing that every product endures before being launched to market. During development, each helmet model undergoes repeated certified drop testing to meet numerous safety standards across the world. The locks also experience similar levels of testing, including intense saltwater immersion that replicates a year of coastal exposure in just 72 hours.

The experience gained from the factory visit has allowed Extra to completely understand every aspect that goes into making the finest security solutions available to the consumer.
